A modular lounge arrives as separate pieces and lets you decide how they go together. That sounds like a styling feature and it is really a practical one. The suite adapts when you rearrange the room, it adapts when you move house, and it gets in through doorways that a one-piece corner suite simply will not pass.

Ours run from $999 to $2,899, imported direct from the factory, and every one of them is on the floor at Coopers Plains.

The reason people actually buy modular

Access. A three metre corner lounge built as a single unit has to come through the front door in one go, around the hallway turn, and up the stairs if you are on the first floor. Plenty do not make it, and some of the ones that do leave a mark on the architrave on the way past. A modular suite comes in as five or six manageable pieces and goes together in the room. If you are in an apartment with a lift, or a Queenslander with a narrow staircase, this is the answer to that problem.

What is on the floor

• JESSICA, $1,799. Six pieces: two arm chairs, two armless chairs, a corner, and an oversized matching ottoman. Feather-filled Cloud Comfort cushions and a deep, sink-in seat. 270cm square, so give it a decent room.
• ZAYLAN, $1,899. Five pieces plus a matching ottoman, in light grey glamour fabric. Finished on all sides, which means it can float in the middle of an open-plan room instead of having to sit against a wall.
• ROMA, $2,899. Six pieces with dual-motor electric recliners at both ends, motorised headrests, a wireless charger, reading lights, cupholders and a storage console. It is air leather, a synthetic, not hide, and we would rather say so here.

The NEW YORK at $999 sits in this collection too, and it is worth being precise about it. It separates into two pieces, which solves most access problems, but the chaise orientation is fixed when you buy it. You choose left hand facing or right hand facing at the time. It does not rearrange afterwards the way the other three do.

Chaise left or chaise right

Stand in the doorway looking into the room. If the chaise should run along the wall to your left, you want it left hand facing. With a true modular suite you can change your mind later: pull the corner out, swap the armless chairs across, and the chaise is on the other side without tools.

Measuring for one

Two numbers decide it. The wall run the suite will sit against, and how far the corner will project into the room. That second one is what makes a room feel crowded, and it is the one people forget. The entry path matters far less with modular than with anything else we sell, which is rather the point of it. Bring your measurements to the showroom and we will work it out with you instead of guessing.

We deliver up to 160km from Coopers Plains, covering Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba. Brisbane $55, Ipswich $75, Gold Coast $95, Sunshine Coast $150, Toowoomba $175. Same-day delivery is available on in-stock suites. Pickup from the showroom is free, and White Glove Installation is $80 if you would like it carried in, assembled and the packaging taken away.

Will a modular lounge fit through a narrow door or up stairs?
Almost always, because it arrives as separate pieces. Check the largest single piece on the product page against your door and hallway, and send us a photo if you are not sure.

Can I change the layout after delivery?
JESSICA, ZAYLAN and ROMA rearrange without tools. NEW YORK separates into two pieces but the chaise side is fixed when you buy it.

What is the cheapest modular?
NEW YORK at $999 in two pieces. JESSICA is $1,799 for six pieces including the ottoman, and ZAYLAN is $1,899.

Do you assemble it?
Delivery is to your door from $55. White Glove Installation is $80 on top, and covers carrying it in, putting it together and taking the packaging away.
