Leather is the loosest word in furniture retail. A lounge sold as leather might be full hide, or it might be a synthetic that has never been near an animal. Both are legitimate and we sell both. The difference here is that we tell you which is which, on every suite, before you hand over any money.

Leather suites on our floor run from $1,499 to $2,899, and single recliner armchairs start at $550. We import direct from the manufacturer, so there is no middleman between the factory and Coopers Plains.

Genuine, Capri, Air and PU: what the words actually mean

Genuine leather is animal hide. It breathes, it softens where you sit, and it takes on a patina over years that no synthetic reproduces. It also marks, and it wants a little care. Our MODENA, ASPEN, MILANO, ASPECT and BELLAGIO suites are genuine leather.

Capri leather is a synthetic. It is hard-wearing, it wipes clean, and it costs less than hide. HENNESSY and HIWA are Capri.

Air leather is also synthetic, with a more breathable backing than standard PU so it sits less hot through a Queensland summer. ROMA is air leather.

PU leather is the plainest of the synthetics, a polyurethane coating over a fabric backing. It is the cheapest to buy and the easiest to wipe down, and it is what you are almost certainly getting whenever a lounge is advertised as leather look and nothing further is said about it. BETTY is PU.

None of that is a knock on the synthetics. In a house with young kids, a dog, or a lounge that takes nightly punishment in front of the television, Capri, Air or PU is usually the better buy. It cleans up after a spilt drink and you will not wince when someone eats dinner on it.

Which one is right for your house

• Kids or pets. Capri, Air or PU. Claws and hide do not get along, and wipe-clean beats patina when there is Milo involved.
• You want it to age well. Genuine leather. It looks better in year five than year one, which is true of almost nothing else in a living room.
• Budget decides it. BETTY is six seats in PU with adjustable headrests for $1,499. HENNESSY is $2,199 for six seats in Capri, and the pieces sell separately if you only need the 3 seater.
• You want the technology. Electric recline spans both camps. HIWA and ROMA are synthetic, ASPEN, MILANO and ASPECT are genuine.

Worth knowing: price here tracks features more than material. ROMA is the dearest leather suite we stock at $2,899 and it is a synthetic, because it carries dual motors, wireless charging, reading lights and a storage console. At the other end the cheapest suite on the floor is BETTY at $1,499 in PU, and genuine leather starts only a hundred dollars above that, with MODENA at $1,599.

Looking after it

Genuine leather wants to stay out of direct sun, gets a dry wipe when it needs one, and a conditioner twice a year. Synthetics want less than that. A damp cloth covers most of it and they cope with light better. Neither likes a heater or an air conditioner blowing straight onto it, which is the fastest way to dry out a lounge in this climate.

Is it genuine leather?
